Castel Sant'Angelo

After 3 hours of walking around Testaccio and Trastevere for orientation, Marj, Melissa, Kelly, and I walked to Castel Sant Angelo. It was a massive tomb built for Hadrian but a fortress that the Popes eventually used as home when Rome was under siege. It was pretty creepy walking up the long spiral ramp and then a lot of really shallow steps with low lighting and very heavy stonewalls. The walk takes you along the burial procession to the Papal chambers, and then up to the roof. On top there were amazing views of the city. We timed it so that we would see it right at sunset and it was very pretty. Even though there were no clouds, it was prettier than the camera could show. On the way back there were gorgeous views along the river!
