Le Vacanze di Primavera: Verona & San Vito (Day 3)

Splitting up the drive from Florence to Venice, we stopped in Verona to see Castelvecchio. Carlos Scarpa, a famous architect, redesigned the museum within the castle.  We’ve studied some of his other works (such as Brion Cemetary-that we visited later in the day), but I think actually getting to experience his designs in person heightens understanding to a different level. His interplay of materials, forced views, and attention to detail were very impressive. A few of us spent so much time in the museum that we ended up getting lunch too late and accidently holding up the bus by 10 minutes… oops. However, spending the additional time in the museum was fully worth it!

We also took a detour to the town of San Vito which is where Scarpa’s famous Brion Cemetery is located. Incredibly serene and thought provoking, his designs include a series of thresholds and the use of water to create reflections and separation of space. After a short visit, we got back on the bus to head to Venice.

These sarcophagi were for a married couple and were meant to always rock towards one another.
